Joe Beesley

Conductor April 2019 – March 2020

Joseph studies music at St Catherine’s College Oxford and is a choral exhibitioner in Merton College Choir. He is also a repetiteur scholar for New Chamber Opera and has worked on two productions this year; Haydn’s Lo Speziale and Handel’s Xerxes. This term he will direct the New Chamber Opera Summer Oratorio.

Joseph is also the Founder, Conductor and Artistic Director of the Brio Symphony Orchestra. This has provided him with the opportunity to work with the internationally renowned oboe soloist Nigel Shore, with whom he performed Bach’s Oboe d’Amore concerto, and to conduct Sibelius’ epic Second Symphony in the Blackheath Halls. He has conducted members of the Junior Royal Academy of Music at Cadogan Hall, and has conducted two of Gershwin’s Overtures with the Eltham College Community Orchestra. As a treble, he has played parts in Tosca, La Bohème, and Albert Herring for English National Opera, and he created one of the lead roles in the world premiere of Nico Muhly’s Two Boys (also ENO), for which he received excellent reviews in the national press.

For six years, Joseph attended the Junior Royal Academy of Music, where he studied oboe and conducting. He currently studies conducting with Toby Purser, and has previously studied with Denise Ham and Howard Williams. Joseph has been principle oboe in the London Schools’ Symphony Orchestra, National Youth Wind Ensemble, and Junior Royal Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra.
